In our opinion, it is not the platform's job to determine who is and isn't who they say, this is the user's job. However, this is a complicated problem, so the platform should provide tools to help assist in that process.

Mastodon's rel=me link system has worked fantastically in our experience, as it respects decentralization, is clear to the user, and does not require instance admin intervention nor create an "in" and "out" group.
